What can we do for your smile?
Metal-Free Fillings
Fillings seal a small hole in your tooth, also known as a cavity. Taking this action prevents the decay (a bacteria-induced infection) from spreading further into your tooth.
The first step in this procedure is a clinical exam of the tooth with x-rays to determine the extent of the decay. Then the decayed area of the tooth is removed. After removing the decay, the remaining tooth structure is roughened or “etched;” then translucent cement is applied to bond the tooth and the filling material together.
There are two categories of dental fillings. The classic metal filling, which is an alloy made up of mercury, silver, tin, and copper. These fillings are strong and inexpensive, but also quite noticeable. Tooth-color fillings (Dr. Kinney’s recommendation) use composite, porcelain, or glass monomer to give a more aesthetic look while bonding to the tooth for more durability.
Crowns and Bridges
A dental crown or “cap” is a covering that fits over a damaged, decayed, or unattractive tooth. Typically crowns will usually take two to three visits. However, at Keystone Dentistry, we offer CEREC® Same-Day crownsGet more information on CEREC, which can be placed in a single visit.
To begin, your tooth is prepared and shaped to fit inside the new covering. After the tooth is prepared, digital impressions of your teeth will be made and viewed on our CAD/CAM software. These impressions will be used to design your crown. The data is then sent to the milling machine for creation.
In addition to protecting a damaged tooth, crowns can be used to create a lifelike replacement for a missing tooth. This is done with bridgework, which spans the space of the missing tooth and requires at least three crowns.
Inlays and Onlays
There are times when a tooth suffers damage too extensive to be treated with a simple filling — but not extensive enough to need a full-coverage crown. In these cases, the best option for restoring the tooth may be an inlay or onlay.
Getting an inlay or onlay is very much like what you would experience having a crown placed. There is one distinction: Less of your natural tooth structure will need to be removed when you receive an inlay or onlay.
Inlays and onlays can be constructed using CEREC®. Dr. KinneyLearn more about our restorative dentist takes digital impressions of your damaged tooth. He then designs the new restoration before it is built in our office’s milling machine. Once ready, the inlay or onlay is placed, adjusted, and bonded to the remaining tooth.
It is considered an “inlay” when it fits within the little points or “cusps” of a back (premolar or molar) tooth. It is an “onlay” if it covers one or more of these cusps. Either way, the procedure for placing an inlay or onlay is the same.
Dental Implants
Dental implants are small titanium posts that replace the roots of missing teeth. They are inserted into your jawbone during a minor surgical procedure that takes place in our dental office.
After your implant has been placed in your jawbone, a completely lifelike porcelain dental crown is attached. In some cases, the implant needs to fuse with the bone for several months before it is permanently crowned. In other cases, you can have new (but temporary) tooth the same day your implants are placed.
You can replace a single tooth, multiple teeth, or all your teeth with implants. Dental implants should last a lifetime with proper care
